TuningPianos should be tuned once a year, for the average pianist or student pianist. More frequently for the professional. For pianos that haven’t been tuned in more than a year, a pitch raise is needed. Once the piano is near A440 I can fine tune the piano. Fine tuning is $165 and typically takes 1.5 -2 hours.
pitch raisePianos left untuned for years need a pitch raise, since this New England region typically sees a large swing in humidity. Specifically when we go from hot humid summers to dry heat in the winter. These large swings expand and contract the wood surrounding the tuning pins, de-stabilizing the tuning. When tunings haven't been scheduled for more than a few years, the piano will be a much larger amount flat. (Further away from A440) It will require an extra 2-3 passes of tuning to get the piano up near A440, then a fine tuning can be scheduled. Pitch raises are $75 each.
Dampp-Chaser humidity systems are the best defense against humidity swings and keeping your piano in tune year round. (Click to visit Piano Life Saver.com)
Stuck or Dead Keys/minor repairsIf one of the keys or several keys are not working as it should, the piano may need minor repair. Stuck keys won’t depress, keys may not sound, a key may sound once but not repeatedly. Or is a part of the piano noisy, buzzing or rattling sounds, squeaks in the pedals. For most of the time, these scenarios, a minor repair job is in order. I typically include minor repairs in the tuning fee. There could be something lodged that does not allow the key to move freely. Or a part has come out of alignment. These can be repairs that can be done very quickly, and of no cost to the piano owner. If the note is not working, and there is much time spent trying to diagnose and repair. Or parts are broken or missing. This is considered a major repair. In this case there is a labor charge of $75/hour, plus a charge for any parts that are replaced. Please click on Services for more info.
